I watched Julia Louis-Dreyfus on HBO’s Veep this week. As a fan of Seinfeld and a Washington D.C. resident, I have been intrigued by the ads for some time. As it turns out, I really enjoyed it! The characters are interesting, and the show left me curious about how they would develop. Have you enjoyed any new shows lately?

What did you think about the Emmy’s?  I didn’t watch the entirety, but I saw a few highlights that I loved, including the one pictured below. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two of my favorite women on TV these days…

I’ve had a lot of time to myself of late. Here’s what’s been keeping me busy (besides work, Finn, and my reading list). What have you been watching?

Lately, I’ve been spending some evenings on my own. So, on top of reading some great books, I’ve been getting hooked on another instant Netflix TV series: Veronica Mars. It’s been fun. Hear me out. The hour-long (42 minutes without commercials) CW show is a combination of crime thriller, mystery story, and high school drama. There’s lots of suspense, teen love, funny quips, and spying. Veronica and her father run a private investigator business, and they tackle cases that involve finding missing people and spying on the illicit lives of other people. There is one ongoing mystery that is slowly being unveiled as they work on the case. But, each episode usually involves a smaller case that gets solved. The crime/mystery storylines are weaved into the saga of Veronica’s private love and family lives. Doesn’t that sound exciting? What shows are you enjoying this summer?

Ever since the debut of 30 Rock, I have loved and admired Tina Fey. Recently, I’ve been stoked about her new memoir, Bossypants, which recounts some hilarious, and sometimes poignant, stories from her life–in college, as an improv actress in Chicago, as a writer and performer on SNL, and finally in her role on 30 Rock. On the drive down to Cashiers for Easter, we listened to this interview with Tina on NPR. (And then we proceeded to listen/watch the 2nd season of 30 Rock on Instant Netflix for the second time.) The interview was interesting and very funny. I highly recommend listening to it if you have some spare time while you drive, cook, hang out, or avoid writing papers.

PS–As I was writing this post, I kept thinking about all the things I loved about 30 Rock. Here are some:

  • the constant parallelism of the show TGS and the actual show, 30 Rock (so clever)
  • the constant mocking of NBC and other big networks
  • Tina Fey’s obsession with food
  • Alec Baldwin’s tone of voice
  • Kenneth’s outrageous, and slightly offensive (but not really because he’s so innocent), comments
  • general ability to raise very controversial topics for thought and find the humor in them
  • Frank’s hats

This was my favorite commercial of the Super Bowl. I’m not a Star Wars fan, so my husband had to give me a little background info on the costume and hand motions. (I hadn’t seen any of the SW movies until the summer of 2005. I’ve been told that it’s un-American, but I really just hate sci-fi.) Even so, I loved this.

I watched Glee last night for the second time ever. Wasn’t Gwyneth amazing covering Cee Lo Green’s massive hit, “Forget [F&#] You”? Here’s a clip…

Since I’m on a TV/movie kick, I’m just going to go with it. Heck, it’s on my mind…

I’m so curious to hear your thoughts on the premiers of series that are picking back up this fall or just beginning. Analyzing characters, plot, and general goings-on of different shows is one of my favorite things to do. Here are the series that we follow and my thoughts on the first episode(s) of each this season. I’ll try to stay away from specifics so I don’t spoil anything. Please comment about your thoughts!

Parenthood (NBC-Tuesday nights)

The first two episodes of this show have been packed with change, which has made for a very engaging plot-line. Though the amount of drama in this show can, at times, seem unrealistic, I really love the way the writers develop relationships and personalities over time. Since I love analyzing family dynamics, this show is always entertaining and, almost always, moving. I really enjoyed the second episode especially, and I’m looking forward to seeing where certain relationships are headed.

Modern Family (ABC-Wednesday nights)

This was my favorite show from last year. Let’s just say that I wish I could put Phil Dunfee in my back pocket to keep me laughing all day. Though the family dynamics are interesting and often endearing, the clever dialogue and hilarious situations are what really keep me engaged. Sadly, I was a little disappointed with this season’s premiere that aired on Wednesday. I just didn’t find myself laughing at the dialogue as much as I usually do. What did you think?

The Office (NBC- Thursday nights)

I just finished watching the episode. 5 minutes ago. Let’s just say it inspired me to write this post because it was just that: inspirational. The opening scene was fantastic–I watched it twice and will likely watch it again today. Pam and Jim are my favorites (I’ll admit), and their dynamic during this episode was interesting and new–I’m excited to watch the development of their relationship. Because of an addition to group, Dwight’s new role, an unexpected budding romance, the new dynamic of the office is priceless. As I watched, it seemed like there was a resurgence of energy on the show, and I’m really excited for this season.

Running Wilde (Fox- Tuesday nights)

Finally, I watched the pilot of Running Wilde with Keri Russell (Felicity) and Will Arnett (Arrested Development). It was really funny! We are huge Gob Bluth fans in this family, so I think we’ll probably add this show to our list for the year.

What are your favorite shows? What are your thoughts on these premiers?

for the premiere of Modern Family! On ABC next Wednesday, 9/8 c.
